The Municipal Police (Gemeente Politie, Police Communale) were organised at the level of each municipality and were headed by the mayor of the municipality. They were responsible for policing of the municipal territory.
On 1 January 2001, the former police forces in Belgium, namely the Judicial Police (Gerechtelijke Politie, Police Judiciaire), the Municipal Police (Gemeente Politie, Police Communale) and the Gendarmerie (Rijkswacht), were integrated and structured on two levels: Federal Police and Local Police.
The Municipal Police were completely absorbed into the local police.
The Local Police (Lokale Politie, Police Locale, Lokale Polizei) is the level of policing in Belgium (België) that provides basic policing. It concerns all administrative and judicial police missions necessary for the management of events/phenomena on the territory of the police zone, as well as some missions of a federal nature. The local police are organized by police zone.
The Belgian Federal Police (Federale Politie, Police Fédérale, Föderale Polizei) is the national police force of the Kingdom of Belgium. It carries out specialized and supra-local administrative and judicial police operations, and supports local police services when needed. Additionally, the Federal Police is responsible for patrolling and ensuring the safety of the country's highways.
