The side cap was introduced in 1959 and was worn with the field dress in all branches of the armed forces. Brown/grey (army), blue (air force) and dark blue (navy).
From 1978 onwards, the grey side cap was replaced by berets across the board but was seen being worn till about 2002.
The German Army (Heer) is the land component of the armed forces of Germany.
The present-day German Army was founded in 1955 as part of the newly formed West German Bundeswehr together with the Marine (German Navy) and the Luftwaffe (German Air Force).
